Abstract

Purulent pericarditis is a very rare entity with a mortality rate that frequently exceeds 20% despite the administration of adequate treatment. Here we present a case of purulent pericarditis due to Streptococcus anginosus and Granulicatella adiacens after an endobronquial ultrasound that was initially manifested as pericardial tamponade and septic shock. Pericardial drainage was performed with slow but progressive improvement. However, the development of constrictive pericarditis forced subsequent pericardiectomy.
