Abstract

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a rare condition, frequently underdiagnosed and potentially deadly if it is not recognized and managed adequately. It is characterized by acute muscular reversible and recurrent weakness, and it is strongly related to a potassium serum levels imbalance in the context of hyperthyroidism. We discuss the case of a 30-year-old man who attended our hospital presenting progressive muscular weakness. The consecutive studies revealed its association to severe hypokalemia and acute thyroiditis.
