Abstract

Neisseria meningitidis is a rare causative agent of pneumonia. Three cases of meningococcal pneumonia diagnosed over 14 years in a center are described. There are predisposing clinical for its development such as smoking, immunological deficits or closed groups of coexistence. The main mechanism of production of meningococcal pneumonia is the aspiration of secretions from the nasopharynx to the lower airway. The meningococcus has proteins in its capsule and endotoxins that will cause lung damage, causing mortality in up to 16% of cases. The diagnosis is generally made by obtaining the results of the blood cultures, since it is not usually suspected clinically; however, since it is highly sensitive to penicillin, the indicated empirical treatment usually resolves the disease, either in outpatient or hospitalized cases.
