Abstract

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a DNA virus that belongs to the family of herpesvirus with the ability to remain latent in the organism after the primary infection. About 40-100% of the population are being carriers of the virus, depending on the geographical area. It is responsible for multiple clinical features in immunocompromised individuals and frequently complicates organ transplants. However, it is extremely infrequent to cause severe clinical features in immunocompetent individuals, with only a few hundred cases described in this population group in recent decades. We present the case of a fifteen-year-old teenage girl diagnosed with cytomegalovirus colitis, suffering severe clinical symptoms that required hospitalization for two weeks.
