Abstract

Pure red cell aplasia is isolated anemia secondary to erythropoiesis failure whose pathogenesis is not exactly known. It is a rare disorder that affects any age group and both sexes equally. We present a case of APCR secondary to thymoma, a type of acquired aplasia that should be suspected in case we find a normocytic normochromic anemia with reticulocytopenia, whose diagnosis is confirmed by the absence of erythroblasts in the bone marrow, and whose treatment consists of thymectomy, requiring sometimes corticoid or immunosuppressive treatment. The APCR may also be a haematological complication of several autoimmune diseases, so it is important to consider them in the differential diagnosis.
