Abstract

Cryoglobulinemia is the presence in the blood of proteins that precipitate in vitro at low temperatures, and dissolve at 37 ºC. It affects the arteries of small and medium caliber and the veins. There is a deposit of immune complexes in the walls of the vessels. Although the phenomenon can be observed in a large number of disorders, it has been associated in more than 90% of cases with B cell neoplasms, hepatitis C and autoimmune diseases. The remaining percentage, called essential cryoglobulinemia, is characterized by a more severe and aggressive course of the disease along with a worse therapeutic response. This article describes the case of a patient affected by essential cryoglobulinemia, in which her bad evolution, despite the treatment leads to a final transmetatarsal amputation
