A 70-year-old male admitted for exacerbation of COPD. Mixed phenotype

A 70-year-old male ex-smoker who entered for increased cough with brownish expectoration and medium-effort dyspnea, without fever, and with normal chest x-ray. He was diagnosed of probable COPD exacerbation and trea- ted effectively with antibiotics, oral corticosteroids and bronchodilators. At the month of admission, spirometry was performed, which showed a severe airflow obstruction and a very positive bronchodilator test, which, together with the presence of peripheral blood eosinophilia, confirmed the diagnosis of COPD phenotype asthma-COPD overlap (ACO).
