Abstract

We present a frequent situation that should always be considered, consisting of the appearance of neurological symptoms in a patient with severe hyponatremia, initially of unknown origin. It is important to rule out potentially treatable acute causes and possible side effects of drugs commonly used, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The rapid identification of this type of problem allows early treatment to avoid further complications. Urea is a safe and useful drug for treating hyponatremia secondary to syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), particularly in elderly and multi-pathological patients.
