Abstract

Hyponatremia is the most common water-electrolyte disorder in patients with heart failure. The presence of hyponatremia is associated with a less favourable prognosis, a longer hospital stays, higher readmission rates, increased long-term morbidity and a poorer response to depletive treatment.

There are several potential causes for hyponatremia in this clinical context. Inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and the concomitant use of diuretics are contributing factors. This represents a significant challenge regarding clinical management. The most common form of presentation is chronic and mild, and currently there is a lack of high-quality, evidence-based studies available to inform the most appropriate treatment approach.
