Abstract

Pleural effusion is a common complication of bacterial pneumonia appearing in 20-40% of hospitalized patients. Its appearance in viral pneumonia is less frequent, as well as its evolution to empyema. We present the case of a 63-year-old woman with bilateral pneumonia due to new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 associated to polymorphonuclear exudate type right pleural effusion with empyema criteria. Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) is isolated in pleural fluid. The patient presented a favorable evolution with directed antibiotic
treatment and thoracic drainage tube placement. During hospitalization, she is diagnosed also of a breast neoplasm.
