Recurrent Graves' disease after thyroidectomy

Graves' disease is a common cause of hyperthyroidism in young women. The initial treatment is usually anti-thyroid medication during 12-24 months. In case of failure in the control of the disease, the second step could be either surgery or oral Iodine-131. We report the case of a woman with Graves’ disease resistant to drugs, and presenting hyperthyroidism several years after total thyroidectomy, due to the presence of an ectopic thyroid tissue in the mediastinum. She was treated with oral Iodine-131. She remained with hypothyroidism.
