Syphilis mimicking neoplastic disease

Syphilis, also known as “the great simulator”, is a systemic sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochaete Treponema pallidum. There are two different stages: early and late syphilis. The first, consisting of primary, secondary and early latent syphilis, occurs during the first year since the disease is acquired. The second, which includes late latent and tertiary syphilis, occurs after the first year. Clinical expression differs according to the stage. It can affect a wide range of organ systems, skin being the most commonly affected organ. Alerts on the case of a patient with syphilis simulating neoplastic disease.
